Meet the Marina Masters of Scrub Island Resort
At Scrub Island Resort, our marina is more than just a docking point—it’s a hub of adventure, service, and passion for the sea. Behind the scenes, two of our dedicated Dock Masters, Ikeido Jamal Locker and Melvin “Melo” Knight, bring a lifetime of maritime experience and warm island hospitality to every guest.
Ikeido Jamal Locker: A Life Shaped by the Ocean
Born and raised in Tortola, Ikeido’s fascination with the ocean began as a child, watching the tides, waves, and shifting currents. “I was amazed by how they were always evolving,” he recalls. His love for boats grew as he realized, “So much of the world can be accessed by boat—it gives you real freedom.”
His maritime journey began as a ferry mate, but his curiosity led him to explore the technology behind boating. This passion took him to the University of Birmingham in the UK, where he earned a degree in Information Technology. After returning to the BVI, he worked for Delta Petroleum, distributing fuel by cargo barge, before joining Scrub Island in 2015 as a mate on the resort’s ferries.
By 2020, he dedicated himself fully to Scrub Island, training under Dock Master Devorn Baker. With years of experience, he stepped into the Dock Master role himself, continuing to grow in his career. “Scrub Island offers opportunity, advice, support, and togetherness. You can share your ideas, and they are truly listened to.” Now, he’s working toward earning his Captain’s license while also passing on his love for the ocean to his three young children.
And when he’s not at the Marina? “Catching up on sleep!” Ikeido laughs.
Melvin “Melo” Knight: From Customer Service to Dock Master
Born in St. Thomas but raised in Tortola, Melo grew up surrounded by the sea. “My uncles were captains for The Moorings, so we spent our childhood on sailing trips,” he says. Later, his friends all had boats, and his love for the water only deepened.
Though passionate about the ocean, Melo also had a talent for numbers, earning an Accounting degree from H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC). He spent years in customer service, working in private aviation, Aeropost, and Intercaribbean Airways, but the call of the sea never faded. In 2022, he took a step toward his dream, earning his Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) and completing his required sea hours.
A chance encounter at a job fair led him to Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina. While DJing an event, he met the resort’s HR team, who were recruiting for a Dock Master. “I realized this was my opportunity to finally work in the marine industry,” he says. By December 2024, he was officially part of the team and is now on track to earn his Captain’s license by April 2025.
Melo brings his customer service expertise to the role, ensuring every guest’s experience is exceptional. “I’m a mellow guy—years in customer service taught me to keep things calm. If a guest is unhappy, it’s my job to turn that around.”
When he’s off duty, he spends time with his four-year-old daughter, helps his girlfriend with her organic store, and even takes care of the laundry. “I love this job,” he says. “This is what I’ve dreamed of since I was young, and I’m finally here. The energy at Scrub Island is amazing.”

The next time you visit, be sure to say hello to these two Dock Masters—they’ll take care of your boating needs while sharing their love for the sea that has shaped their lives.
